The Old Growth of the sea, kelp beds form a haven for many critters. Can you see the horseshoe crab nestled at the top between two of the kelp forms? The copper bands in this piece are "anticlastically raised", a time-intensive form of manipulating metal in two opposite curves. Tension must be maintained in the direction of the large curve while the smaller curve is hammered upwards with rows of overlapping blows. After a few rows of hammering, the piece must be heated and quenched in cold water to anneal it, softening it enough to work again. Once raised and finished, the parts are all separately patinated using different chemical processes to achieve each distinct desired color, and are then connected together.
