PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

After graduating from Lane Technical High School in Chicago, Illinois, Bill Giese entered the military, serving as a flight instructor and helicopter pilot for the U.S. Army Air Corps and for the Illinois National Guard.

Following his military service, Giese found employment doing precision tool and grinding work. Later, he changed his occupation to carpenter.

For seventeen years, Giese worked as a carpenter, building numerous home and commercial buildings from the ground up and doing custom interior cabinet work. He left the Chicago area in the early 80's and settled in Northern California where he built his retirement home and a spacious woodshop.

Not long after, Giese began turning bowls. He's turned more than 500 bowls since he started and his enthusiam for turning continues to grow.

His bowls are turned from solid blocks of wood or, in the case of segmented bowls, from pieces of different wood. He uses hardwoods and softwoods from all over the world, combining color and grain to produce artistic work.

The handsome, finely finished bowls frequently win first and second place ribbons in the juried shows that he enters.
